The Arrival
Well here we are all safe and sound (except for Maria who was airline-challenged and is supposed to arrive this morning). The west-coast contingent, who all arrived one day earlier, took the Maputo Tour today which included an amusing ride on the small ‘Tourist Train’, and learned some interesting tid-bits about the city (apparently the train station was not designed by Gustave Eiffel - shocking, I know!). The same train showed up later in the day going down the main street in front of our restaurant, as part of a parade honouring the domestic league soccer champions.

So, it’s hot here – steamy hot – it’s a bit of a shock, since a number of us experienced snow just prior to leaving. Maputo city is described as ‘European, not African’ and I guess this is a good transition from where we arrived from to where we’re going. For example, a nice beverage (Laurentina Preta) set us back a whole $1.50 at the restaurant last night – this is culture shock we can live with!

Most people packed it in fairly early at night – to lay out flat after our various long flights and catch up on some much-needed sleep. We were left with a couple of amusing questions about
1) Why would anyone want to cart around a large table for sale to tourists at restaurants?
2) Why would anyone at a restaurant look at a table for sale going down the street and say ‘Hey – I need to buy a table tonight?’
